Top example of a Georgian silver cowrie snuff box.
This carries a full coat of arm for 1st Earl of Annesley, County Down, Ireland.
Makers mark for Benjamin Stokes, Dublin 1789.
The title of Earl Annesley was created on 17th August 1789 for Francis Annesley 2nd Viscount Glerawly. This could well have been made to mark the creation of the Earldom.
The engraving is in fantastic order extremely crisp gilding inside the lid is also in excellent condition. It does not close fully, there is a little play in the hinge, but a wonderful item, full of history.
